1) Make sure you get your carpet deep-cleaned at least once per year. Depending on the traffic that you have in your home or business, you may need to do this more often, but at least once per year is highly recommended by major carpet care experts. As long as you have (or can rent) the proper equipment, you can do this yourself. You can also have it done for you. But make sure it gets done at least once per year.
2) Be mindful of spills and take care of them when they happen. Most spills can be cleared right up with water; some may need a bit of carpet detergent. There are many different products available, some engineered for specific types of stains. If you have nothing special on hand, try a mixture of vinegar and water. This may take care of the stain on a temporary basis until you can get it properly cleaned.
3) Regular vacuuming is crucial to the health of your carpet. Depending, again, on the amount of traffic, you should vacuum anywhere from daily to once or twice a week. Be sure to vacuum from several different directions to make sure that all the dirt and debris is picked up.
4) Mind your entranceways. Consider putting a small area mat just inside the doors where people enter the house. This will help minimize the amount of dirt that comes into the house (and onto your carpet) in the first place.
Most of the dirt that comes into a home and winds up in the carpet is solid debris. The small part that isn’t dry is moist or wet, such as greases and oils. The dry debris is easily removed by regular vacuuming, and the non-dry debris can be taken care of on a case-by-case basis.
Keeping regular care of your carpet will ensure that it will last as long as possible, and you will be enjoying it for years to come.
